Shipping zone calculator for USPS, UPS & FedEx

Zone

Zones are determined by each carrier from the official zone chart and apply to domestic U.S. shipments. Distance bands shown are approximate guidance — confirm the exact figure for your carrier and service.

How shipping zones work

A zone is distance, not a place. This shipping zones map shows USPS, UPS and FedEx zones radiating outward from your origin ZIP — the farther a package travels, the higher the zone and the higher the cost.

8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
Zone 1Local · up to ~50 mi
Zone 2~51–150 mi
Zone 3~151–300 mi
Zone 4~301–600 mi
Zone 5~601–1,000 mi
Zone 6~1,001–1,400 mi
Zone 7~1,401–1,800 mi
Zone 81,800+ mi

Distance bands are approximate and for guidance only. Carriers assign the exact zone from their official origin-to-destination zone chart, and bands vary by carrier, service and date. USPS®, UPS®, FedEx, Canada Post and Purolator are trademarks of their respective owners.

How zones work in Canada

The 1–8 zone chart is a U.S. domestic system used by USPS, UPS and FedEx. Canada Post and Purolator price mainly by destination region instead — Rollo Ship applies the correct model for each carrier automatically, so you compare all five on one screen.

Lower your zone, lower your cost

Distance is the single biggest lever on ground shipping cost — moving the same box from Zone 2 to Zone 8 can multiply the price.

Ship from closer

Fulfil from the warehouse or 3PL nearest the buyer to cut the distance — and the zone — on every order.

Split your inventory

Stocking East and West reduces how far the average order travels, pulling more shipments into lower zones.

Consider zone skipping

High-volume sellers move parcels in bulk closer to the destination before handing off, so the carrier leg starts at a lower zone.

Use flat-rate for high zones

Flat-rate services such as USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate ignore zones, so they can beat zoned rates on long, heavy hauls.

Rollo Ship compares zoned and flat-rate options for USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post and Purolator on one screen, so the cheapest choice for your zone surfaces before you print.

Shipping zone FAQ

What sellers ask about zones.

What is a shipping zone?

A shipping zone measures the distance from origin to destination, not a fixed region. Zones run from 1 (local) to 8 (farthest). USPS, UPS and FedEx use the zone to price domestic U.S. shipments — higher zone, longer distance, higher cost.

How do I find my shipping zone?

Enter your origin and destination ZIP codes in the finder above. The zone comes from the carrier's official chart. As a rule of thumb, a longer distance between the two ZIPs means a higher zone and a higher rate.

How many shipping zones are there?

Eight main domestic zones, 1 through 8. Some services add Zone 9 for offshore and territory destinations. Zone 1 is local; Zone 8 covers the longest cross-country distances.

Do USPS, UPS and FedEx use the same zones?

All three use a distance-based 1-to-8 system measured from the origin ZIP, so the concept matches. The exact chart, cutoffs and surcharges differ by carrier and service, so confirm the figure for what you're shipping.

What about Canada Post and Purolator?

Canadian carriers price mainly by destination region rather than the U.S. 1-to-8 chart. Rollo Ship applies the right model per carrier, so you compare USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post and Purolator together.

Is the zone calculator free?

Yes, with no account needed. Rollo Ship is a free multi-carrier shipping platform with no monthly subscription; your first 200 labels are free, then 5¢ each, as low as 1¢ at the VIP tier of Rollo Rewards.

Is there a USPS shipping zones map?

Yes — USPS shipping zones are mapped from your origin ZIP outward, from Zone 1 (local) to Zone 8 (cross-country). Enter your origin and destination ZIP in the finder above to place your shipment on the zone map. Rollo Ship then compares USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post and Purolator rates for that zone before you print.

Is there a UPS shipping zones map?

Yes — UPS uses the same distance-based 1-to-8 zones mapped outward from the origin ZIP, as does FedEx for U.S. domestic ground, so the map and bands above apply to all three. Rollo Ship surfaces the cheapest rate for your zone across all five carriers before you print.

Shipping zones and zone charts are set by each carrier and vary by service, region and date, and are subject to change at any time without notice.
