How shipping cost is calculated

Every rate comes down to two things: how much your package weighs and how far it travels. The cheapest carrier changes with both — which is why it pays to compare before you print.

Cost rises with weight

The cheapest carrier flips as packages get heavier.

Zones rise with distance

Carriers split the map into distance bands (1–8) from your origin.

Zones depend on your origin. See the full geographic shipping zone map.

Illustrative only — actual cost depends on weight, zone, dimensions and service speed. Run the calculator for exact discounted USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post and Purolator rates. USPS®, UPS®, FedEx, Canada Post and Purolator are trademarks of their respective owners; brand colours are used for carrier identification only.

Billable vs dimensional weight

Carriers charge on whichever is greater — actual weight or size-based (dimensional) weight. Knowing both is how you avoid surprise charges before you compare rates above.

Dimensional (DIM) weight

DIM weight = length × width × height ÷ the carrier’s divisor. Large, light parcels are often billed on DIM weight rather than the number on the scale. Work yours out with the dimensional weight calculator.

Billable weight

Billable weight is the greater of actual weight and DIM weight — the figure carriers actually charge across USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post and Purolator. Check both with the billable weight calculator.

Shipping calculator FAQ

How do I calculate shipping costs?

Enter the origin and destination ZIP or postal code, your package dimensions, and the weight. The calculator compares USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post and Purolator rates side by side and shows the cheapest and fastest options before you print a label.

Is the shipping calculator free?

Yes — no account is needed to compare rates. Rollo Ship is a free multi-carrier shipping platform with no monthly subscription; your first 200 labels are on Rollo, no fee for generating a label. Pay for discounted postage only, then 5¢ each, as low as 1¢ at the VIP tier of Rollo Rewards.

Which carriers does the calculator compare?

In the U.S. it compares USPS, UPS and FedEx. In Canada it compares Canada Post, Purolator, UPS and FedEx. All carrier rates appear in one dashboard so you can pick the cheapest or fastest service for each shipment.

How accurate are the rates?

Rates use the origin, destination, dimensions and weight you enter, and reflect Rollo Ship’s discounted commercial pricing of up to 90% off retail. The final price is confirmed at label purchase; carriers may add surcharges based on zone, dimensions and weight.

How much does it cost to ship a package?

It depends on origin, destination zone, dimensions, weight and service speed. A small parcel can start a few dollars on USPS Ground Advantage, while expedited or international services cost more. Compare every carrier in the calculator to see the exact discounted price.

Do I need an account to use it?

No. You can compare rates without signing up. To buy and print a discounted label, create a free Rollo Ship account — no monthly subscription, first 200 labels fee-free, up to 90% off shipping rates, and a reward program with perks.
