How Long Does UPS 2nd Day Air® Take?

UPS 2nd Day Air® takes two business days, delivered by end of day on the second business day. Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding UPS holidays. So a package shipped on Thursday arrives Monday, not Saturday, unless you pay for Saturday delivery.

 

The clock starts when UPS picks up or receives the package before your location’s cutoff. Miss the cutoff and day one becomes the next business day.

Is UPS 2nd Day Air® Guaranteed?

Not in 2026. UPS suspended its money-back Service Guarantee for most services in 2020. Today it’s active for UPS 2nd Day Air A.M.® and the Next Day Air® services. Standard UPS 2nd Day Air® still has a scheduled delivery date, but no refund if it arrives late.

This is the detail most guides, and some AI answers, still get wrong. If a customer needs a firm, refundable commitment, choose 2nd Day Air A.M.® for a commercial address or step up to next-day service.

What happens if a standard 2nd Day Air package is late? You track it and contact UPS, but you can’t claim a shipping refund under the suspended guarantee. Even the guaranteed services come with conditions and exclusions set out in UPS’s terms of service.

Does UPS 2nd Day Air® Deliver on Saturday?

Yes, but only if you add it. Saturday Delivery is an optional, paid add-on for UPS 2nd Day Air®. Ship on Thursday with Saturday Delivery selected and the package can arrive Saturday. Without it, Saturday and Sunday don’t count as transit days.

 

Saturday availability depends on the destination ZIP code, and it’s strongest in metro areas. It pays off when a customer needs weekend arrival, such as event supplies or a birthday gift.

For earlier weekday arrival, UPS 2nd Day Air A.M.® delivers by 10:30 a.m. or noon on the second business day to eligible commercial addresses. It doesn’t deliver to homes.

 

 

 

How Much Does UPS 2nd Day Air® Cost?

There’s no single price. UPS prices 2nd Day Air by shipping zone, billable weight and surcharges. A light parcel to a nearby zone costs far less than a bulky box shipped coast to coast. Expect it to cost more than UPS® Ground and less than Next Day Air®.

Five things move the price most:

 

• • Zone: distance from origin to destination ZIP. Higher zones cost more.
  • Billable weight: the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight (length × width × height ÷ 139).
  • Residential delivery: home addresses carry a residential surcharge.
  • Fuel and delivery-area surcharges: added on top of the base rate.
  • Add-ons: Saturday Delivery, signature options and Large Package charges.

Dimensional weight is the one that surprises sellers. A 12″ × 12″ × 12″ box bills at 13 lb even if the item inside weighs 2 lb. Right-sizing the box is often the cheapest fix.

What Are the Size and Weight Limits?

UPS 2nd Day Air® accepts packages up to 150 lb, up to 108 inches long, and up to 165 inches in length plus girth. Girth is twice the width plus twice the height. Packages over 70 lb need a Heavy Package label.

 

That makes it a practical choice for heavy items that still need to arrive fast, like fitness equipment or machine parts. Watch the Large Package threshold, though.

A package counts as a Large Package if it’s longer than 96 inches or exceeds 130 inches in length plus girth. UPS then bills it at a minimum of 90 lb and adds a surcharge. Measure bulky boxes before you choose air.

 

 

UPS 2nd Day Air® vs. UPS® Ground, Next Day Air® and USPS Priority Mail

UPS 2nd Day Air® is the right pick when ground is too slow for the destination and overnight is more than the order is worth. For short distances, UPS® Ground often arrives just as fast for less. For light parcels, USPS Priority Mail is usually the cheaper two-to-three-day option.
